I've earned quiet a few nicknames over the years..."Marinader X", "Chicken George" "Chicken Sausage and Heineken". It's all in good fun, but the reality is, at age 31 it's time to be extra careful about what I choose to put into my body. Recently I've made some changes in my diet that I consider to be tremendous sacrifices. While I can never picture myself becoming an outright vegetarian, I have completely eliminated pork and red meat from my diet. So no matter how badly I want to sink my teeth into a pulled pork flatbread sandwich from Subway, I simply can't do it. Yesterday I decided to check out this years DC VEGFEST to see what healthy alternatives it had to offer. Let's just say it was a very good decision. I got to sample some really interesting and tasteful foods AND was introduced to Mom's Organic Market and the awesomeness that is their "organic fruit roll up". You better believe that I'm going to
I also picked up some all natural pasta from Pasta Valente, a small independent pasta shop based out of Charlottesville, VA. Shrimp Alfredo on deck for dinner next week!
I'll let you in on a little secret. If you're ever looking for Jamaal, chances are he's pedaling his ass off at his beloved spin class at the gym or he's driving to "everlast" after pedaling his ass off at the gym. Everlasting Life Cafe is a family-owned, 100% organic cafe with culinary classes, catering and even hosts to live performances by local DC talent. Jamaal swears by the food and at this point should probably own a small share in the business. I tried it once but the meatloaf tasted like carpet covered in bbq sauce #justsayin. Nevertheless, "everlast" is a great choice for the true vegan.
I ended the day with my first trip to Sweetgreen. I had previously heard good things about it but never stopped by to check it out. When I got to the register, pulled out my wallet and gave the lady my debit card to pay for a $10 salad, I was probably more skeptical than excited. But after I finished the salad, I can honestly say it was worth the $10.
