4 lessons I learned about relationships from Phonte's Charity Starts at Home...

Besides being an incredibly meticulous and cratfy writer, Phonte's strong point has always been his ability to connect with his listeners. Charity Starts At Home plays out like theme music for "30 somethings" with mortgages, student loans, car payments and bad ass kids. If I were magically given the ability to rap at my ripe age of 31, I would rap like Phonte. I really feel like this Charity Starts At Home project is the epitome of "adult rap". At this point in my personal life, everything Phonte says resonates with me. I've been playing it a lot lately and have realized that Phonte is at his best when speaking about relationships. Remember this verse? Yeah, I couldn't have said it better Tigallo. So what I have done is compiled a list of the 4 lessons I have learned from Charity Starts At Home.

1. It's ok that I wanna smash other women.
To be honest, I've never been one of those "player" type dudes. When most of my friends were chasing ass in every nook and cranny around town, I was in a committed relationship. I was happy in my relationship, but I admit there were definitely times when I wish I was out chasing ass with them. But I always knew I had a good thing at home. The lesson here is simple. Just because I think about smashing every girl I see on 40oz Van's site(NSFW), doesn't mean that I don't love my girlfriend and want to be with her. Phonte breaks down that dynamic perfectly in "Sendin' My Love".

2. Complacency and commitment are not the same.
Speaking of committed relationships, sometimes there comes a point when you realize that you are only with that person because....well, you don't even know. You're just together. That's not a good sign. If you are only with that person because you don't wanna be single, it's time to break out the playstation, get a case of Coors light and take the "Lonely Man" dinners outta the freezer. Again, the lesson is simple. When that anchor becomes a "ball and chain", it's time to split.

3. Being in love is a very special feeling that's not easily recreated.
Ok, I'm not trying to get all emotional on y'all but if you've ever been in love then you understand. I don't know if I can make it any cornier than this but..."love is special". It's a great feeling being in a relationship and having someone on your side that you love and more importantly trust. Let Phonte explain it to you.

4. Even though we will always have the desire to smash other women, actually doing it really isn't worth it.
So, remember how I said I wanna smash every girl I see on 40 Oz Van's site? Well, chances are I never will. In fact, the 30 inches between my face and my computer screen are probably the closest I'll ever get to any female that even looks remotely close to that. Even though I may have the desire to "hunt", that doesn't mean I need to act on it. Chasing women can be fun at times, but it's expensive, tiring, and dangerous. And in the words of Chris Rock "New pussy can't cook!"
