Despite popular belief, I AM trying to eat healthier. Yes, I occasionally indulge in a four piece wings and fried rice combo from the Hong Kong Express, but what self-respecting black male doesn't?? In the past two years, I've made serious strides when it comes to living a healthier lifestyle. I work out more often than usual, I've eliminated pork AND red meat from my diet, and I've even started using all natural body wash and soap. I consider these to constitute a significant lifestyle change, considering how many hamburgers marinaded in teriyaki sauce I consumed on a weekly basis...just ask Jamaal. Anyway, on a recent trip to Whole Foods I came across a new beverage, Kombucha. Considering that it looks like old toilet water cleverly disguised in a glass bottle, I'm not really sure why I even bought it. But, I'm definitely happy that I did. Kombucha is a fermented tea. It's organic, raw and though in recent years it has seen an increase in popularity, Kombucha has been around for centuries. Stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joes have started loading their shelves with it per popular demand. Although the health benefits have yet to be scientifically proven, consumers have raved about its positive effects on energy, blood pressure, metabolism and even eyesight. While it's still too early for me to make grand declarations about the power of Kombucha, I can say that Kombucha has definitely given me a much needed jolt of energy throughout my work day. Plus, it feels good to know that I'm continuing to make minor but significant improvements in my lifestyle. Kombucha is one. You should try it out.
