In 2011 I had the privilege to see The Robert Glasper Experiment in Washington DC's intimate Bohemian Cavern for Jazz Week. Man-oh-Manischewitz!! This brotha came out and slammed his hands down on the piano and in a drunkard fashion said "Emcee squarrred!!!" That was to pay tribute to his late friend J-Dilla, from their I knew we were in for a treat that night, and all I could as is of course..."when's the album dropping?"..Wait no more...
It's okay to change your frequency from FM to BR. The Robert Glasper Experiment demands so musically on the second to last day of this leap year black history month. I almost felt like that VH1 commercial after listening to this NO SKIP ALBUM i.e."Stokely Williams skattin'..Yasin spittin'..Bilal singing..Badu swayin'..Lupe rippin". This is an operation for the sole purpose of lobbying musically, soulfully for what is needed on the radio, unsaturated music.
Highlights honestly..it's the whole damn thing yall, this album is going to be on constant rotation, and this is already an ALBUM OF THE YEAR PICK. I absolutely adore the covers on this collection done by Lalah Hathaway(Sade Cherish the day); Badu's Afro Blue (Lizz Wright) and David Bowie's Letter to Hermoine done by Bilal. For those who may have lost a little faith in Lupe from Lasers, he delivers a strong ode to one of his hero's in Gil Scott Heron just to let you know he's still reppin for the lyrics. So from hip hop to jazz to r&b..and a special touch of rock with a cover of "Smells like teen spirit"..ahhh radio needs to be like this all day..go out and cop it!!!!
Love for the people.
