Space and Time: Muhsinah

  Back in the Brookland Groove....

Brookland D.C. is located in the North East corner of Washington, D.C. It is a neighborhood with strong connections to Washington's black intelligentsia. From the early 1900's residents included Lucy Diggs Slowe, Ralph Bunche, Robert C. Weaver and in more recent years singer/songwriter, producer, Muhsinah.

Muhsinah doesn't really know what kind of day it's going to be. She arrives at "B" Cafe(Brookland Cafe) decked out in all white feeling festive as always with her signature smile and retro gear. But there was much to discover on her childhood stomping grounds that now included different ethnic restaurants and a huge recreation park. It's only right that the prodigal daughter Muhsinah reminisce park bench style on old times, her EP Gone, mom dukes dj skills and her ultimate jam session.

If you have ever been to a Muhsinah show or are going for the first time you're gonna hear a genre of music you've never heard before "Muhsinah Music". The uber talented spirit does not want her music to be considered "soul"..or "neo".."it's just Muhsinah". The method behind the melody started in adolescent years while listening to momma Muhsinah spin records as a DJ(so sexy by the way).

"GONE", the EP has the title to recall and show respect for the courage in the wake of misfortune relationship wise. She explains with simplistic beauty in the song "stop & go" a personal favorite from "GONE" that she can perform over and over, maybe with her dream jam session band that would include Prince and Jimmy. Muhsinah was more that kind with her time and when asked what gift would she pay over and over to folk of all ages she gave two words "Self-Expression". Peace Muhsinah and thank you!!!!!
