(cover art - No York!)
If you know Blu, he's probably your favorite rapper. Or at least in your top 5. If you don't know Blu, it's probably because Blu doesn't give a fuck if you know him or not. As much as I hate the term "backpack rapper", Blu is the embodiment of it. He's incredibly talented and fiercely independent. The only thing standing between Blu and being known in the higher ranks of hip hop...is Blu. While to some it may appear as though Blu is squandering his potential, the truth is, he represents the one thing that The Sovereign Space cares most about, independence. In true Blu fashion, he posted a link on his twitter to this youtube page. If you look past the odd video of two asian toddlers being sprayed with a water bottle (kinda creepy, I know), you'll notice videos for every song on his latest album, No York!. I've given the album quite a few listens and I'm definitely pleased but this "Jazzmen" song??!!! On. Repeat. If you're familiar with Blu you know he's at his best when rapping over jazz inspired tunes. While "Jazzmen" isn't that typical jazz sound; the horns, the drums, the sheer effortlessness of Blu makes this record special. You should get to know Blu. Check out his latest video "My Sunshine" also from the No York! album.
